FEDERATION OF STATE MEDICAL BOARDS (FSMB)
Become an FSMB Leader
Introduction: Become an FSMB Leader
FSMB needs your leadership skills. As the national resource and voice on behalf of state medical boards committed to improving the quality of medical practice and protecting the health and safety of the public, we rely on the experience, expertise, creativity and commitment of our elected leaders.
One of the most rewarding experiences for members of state medical and osteopathic
boards is the opportunity to serve on FSMB's Board of Directors or its Nominating Committee, helping guide our organization's vision and mission.
Each year, FSMB's Nominating Committee seeks capable and committed individuals for consideration as candidates, and we would like to hear from you.
Service in a leadership position brings many benefits, notably the opportunity to make a real impact in the direction and policy of a national organization with a vital role in health care.
Nominations are generally open in the fall of each year, and close in the winter. Please visit www.fsmb.org/candidates to participate. We encourage you to make national service a part of your experience as an FSMB Fellow!

Q&A: What's Involved in Becoming an FSMB Leader?
- What offices can I run for?
If you are a member of a state medical or osteopathic board - in other words, an FSMB Fellow - you can run for a seat as a director on the FSMB Board of Directors, for an officer's position on the Board, or for a seat on the FSMB Nominating Committee.
- How do I learn more about the responsibilities of each office?
To learn exactly what the duties of elected offices entail, and the terms of service for each position, read "Classes of Membership, Election and Membership Rights" in the FSMB bylaws.
- Who votes?
Candidates running for seats on the Board and Nominating Committee are elected by FSMB's House of Delegates. The right to vote at meetings of FSMB's House of Delegates is vested in, and restricted to, member medical and osteopathic
boards. Each member board is entitled to one vote, which is cast by the designated voting delegate of that member board.
- Why should I run for office?
Serving on FSMB's Board of Directors or its Nominating Committee is a rewarding experience that offers the opportunity to help shape national policy on important issues in health care. You will play an instrumental role in helping FSMB achieve its vision and mission.
- How do I get involved?
Nominations open in the fall of each year. To learn more, please call the Director of Leadership Services at (817) 868-4067, or visit www.fsmb.org. We encourage you to make national service a part of your experience as an FSMB Fellow!

Why I Serve: Action and Results
"Smart, motivated people who care, doing the right things for the right reasons: That is how I see the FSMB. It has a rich history of collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders to promote public health and safety, and being on FSMB's Board has given me a chance to play a more active role in that effort. FSMB is an organization with good ideas, but it also has a history of action and results, which is gratifying."
- Jon V. Thomas, MD, MBA, FSMB Board of Directors
Getting involved today to shape the future.
"The medical profession and health care system face real challenges in coming years. I am passionate about this profession and I want to do all I can to help shape it for the future. By getting more involved within FSMB, I feel I have been able to influence decisions today that can have a positive impact later."
- Doris C. Brooker, MD, Chair, FSMB Board of Directors, 2004-2005
