FCVS Benefits

Permanent Repository

Applicants who complete the verification process establish a permanent, lifetime portfolio of primary-source verified credentials — allowing quick, easy and inexpensive access to medical credentials. These documents can be used throughout the applicant's career for state licensure, hospital privileges, employment and professional memberships. For physicians, this service is extremely valuable for those graduating from medical schools outside the U.S. or Canada, where verification is often time-consuming, costly and difficult. Finally, should the applicant's related programs close or records be permanently lost or destroyed, the FCVS records become invaluable for future credential verification needs.

Reduced Processing Time

The average processing time is approximately eight to 12 weeks from the date of receipt for physicians and four to six weeks for physician assistants. However, total processing time will vary depending on the completeness of the application submitted and the response time by primary sources. Applications submitted between February 1 and June 30 (peak processing time) may be delayed by an additional two to three weeks.

We will not begin verification of your credentials until we receive all required information and appropriate documentation

Once an FCVS packet is established, FCVS is capable of reproducing a Physician or Physician Assistant Information Profile and forwarding it to the entity of choice within three to four weeks for physicians and one to two weeks for physician assistants.

Cost Savings

The average applicant, throughout his/her career, will be required to produce documentation of their medical credentials numerous times. If the applicant has an FCVS profile, obtaining this information is as easy as completing a simple update form and mailing it to FCVS. Over the course of a applicant's career, this provides considerable time and cost savings.

Common Licensure Application Form (CLAF)

The online Common License Application Form (CLAF) is a new licensure application process for physicians. CLAF has been developed to: 1) reduce the number of incomplete applications received by state medical boards, 2) allow for the collection of uniform information, and 3) add convenience for physicians applying for licensure in multiple states.

More than 1,963 physicians have been authenticated to use the CLAF since the State Medical Board of Ohio became the first state to integrate the new form into its online application process in December 2006. The New Hampshire Board of Medicine went live with the form in April 2007 and the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure went live with the form in June 2007.

Developed by a workgroup of state medical board representatives, the CLAF is the first phase of the Trusted Agent pilot program, which is exploring the feasibility of building a Web-based system that will allow physicians to fill out and submit state licensing applications online, as well as obtain confidential credentialing data from primary sources in a secure environment. The Trusted Agent program is a joint effort by the FSMB and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
