The FSMB periodically convenes representatives of state medical boards, together with experts in specific subject areas, to study and develop recommendations on issues pertinent to medical regulation. Policies are intended to give guidance and encourage consistency among state medical boards in addressing trends in medical practice and regulation.

This 2008 report, co-published by the FSMB, the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada and the Milbank Memorial Fund, explores innovative ways for medical regulatory bodies to increase their capacity to protect the public and improve health care quality and safety.

• Balance, Uniformity and Fairness: Effective Strategies for Law Enforcement for Investigating and Prosecuting the Diversion of Prescription Pain Medications While Protecting Appropriate Medical Practice
This policy brief provides key strategies to assist law enforcement officials faced with complicated cases of physicians suspected of illegal conduct related to prescription drugs, including a step-by-step template to help identify when behavior is potentially criminal. The brief was produced by the Law Enforcement Roundtable of the Balanced Pain Policy Initiative, a collaborative effort of the FSMB, the Center for Practical Bioethics and the National Association of Attorneys General.

• International Medical Education Quarterly (InMedEd)
This bi-annual newsletter, produced by the FSMB and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, provides medical licensure professionals in the United States with objective, detailed information on medical education and medical schools outside the United States and Canada.

This booklet discusses the collaborative state medical board response to Hurricane Katrina, lessons learned during the crisis and emergency preparedness resources available.
