Before you begin your review of these documents, I'd like to share a few general observations about MOL.

Maintenance of Licensure (MOL) is envisioned as a system of continuous professional development for physicians that will ultimately be adopted by state medical and osteopathic boards in the United States. It supports, as a condition for license renewal, a physician's commitment to lifelong learning that is objective, relevant to their area of practice and contributory to improved health care. One particular point I would highlight is that the FSMB strongly supports having physicians who are already engaged in Maintenance of Certification (MOC) or Osteopathic Continuous Certification (OCC) recognized as being substantially in compliance with any state's MOL program. For those physicians not specialty-board certified by the ABMS or AOA, or for those physicians not engaged in MOC or OCC for whatever reason, the FSMB supports the ability of physicians to achieve MOL compliance through completion of a wide range of activities, including CME, that many physicians already complete.

We are now developing pilot projects for several state medical and osteopathic boards to test the implementation of the MOL concept. A special collaborating group of organizations with expertise in assessment methodologies is also exploring a variety of tools to assist state boards in implementing MOL.
