PLAS Overview
The Post-Licensure Assessment System, or PLAS, is a collaborative initiative of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to provide services for use by medical licensing authorities in assessing the ongoing competence of licensed or previously licensed physicians. PLAS comprises two independent yet complementary services - medical knowledge assessment resources (the Special Purpose Examination, or SPEX) and clinical competence assessment resources. Collectively, they provide a standardized, national program for assisting state medical and osteopathic boards in their ongoing mission to assure that qualified, competent physicians are licensed to practice medicine.

Additional information about the SPEX and the clinical competence assessment resources are available through the links at the top of this page.
