Attempt Limit
Limited to three attempts to pass USMLE Step 3. All Montana applicants have unlimited attempts to pass USMLE Steps 1 and 2. Note: There is no option for applicants who fail at Step 3 three times to apply to the Montana Board for approval to take the exam again, and thereby qualify for licensure.
Time Limit
Must complete USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 within a seven (7) year period, which begins upon passing Step 1. Exceptions, see Important Notes below.

Requests for an exception to the seven year time limit will be considered on an individual basis for dual degree (MD/PhD) candidates. Dual degree candidates must submit notarized copies of both MD/ PhD diplomas with the Step 3 application if they exceed the 7 year time frame.

Eligibility Requirements/Cancellation Policy
If it is determined that you do not meet eligibility requirements at the time your application is received, or you decide to cancel your registration prior to approval, or your application is not complete by the published deadline date, your registration will be cancelled and a portion of the application fee withheld. The USMLE Step 3 fee is non-refundable and non-transferable from one eligibility period to another or from one application to another.
