Attempt Limit

Applicants have 3 (three) attempts to pass each Step or Step Component with a few exceptions. Applicants who qualify for the exceptions either held a PIT permit on September 1, 2005 or have been licensed in good standing in another state for five (5) years. Contact the Texas Board at 512-305-7030 for more information. (Incomplete examinations count as an attempt).

Important Notes

  • Single Degree Applicants
    • The time between the first step that was passed and the last step that was passed cannot exceed 7 calendar years
    • The time frame for passage of all parts of the examination may be extended to 10 years if the applicant:

    (a) Is specialty board certified by an ABMS or BOS board, or,

    (b) Has practiced under a faculty temporary license issued by the board for at least 12 months and is recommended by the institution

  • Dual Degree Applicants (MD/Ph.D. or DO/Ph.D.)
    • All exam steps must be passed no later than two years after completion of the required post graduate training (currently one year for US/Canadian graduates and 2 years for international medical graduates).
    • The time frame for passage of all parts of the examination may be extended to no more than 10 years after completion of the required postgraduate training (currently one year for US/Canadian graduates and 2 years for international medical graduates) if the applicant:

      (a) Is specialty board certified by an ABMS or BOS board, or,

      (b) Has practiced under a faculty temporary license issued by the board for at least 12 months and is recommended by the institution.

    Dual degree candidates must submit a notarized copy of their MD and PhD diplomas with the Step 3 application. Candidates outside of the time limit must also submit an official transcript of examination scores directly to the medical board. Requests for official transcripts can be made by clicking here. Eligibility Requirements/Cancellation Policy
If it is determined that you do not meet eligibility requirements at the time your application is received, or you decide to cancel your registration prior to approval, or your application is not complete by the published deadline date, your registration will be cancelled and a portion of the application fee withheld. The USMLE Step 3 fee is non-refundable and non-transferable from one eligibility period to another or from one application to another.
