Before printing and submitting the paper application, there are several things you should do to ensure a smooth experience in registering for the Step 3.

1. Familiarize yourself with the USMLE Bulletin of Information and the Step 3 Content Description.
2. Check that you meet the USMLE program's eligibility requirements for taking Step 3.
3. In completing the application, you will be asked to specify the state medical board to for which you are sitting Step 3. Most state medical boards have additional state-specific criteria for sitting Step 3, e.g., a minimum postgraduate training requirement, attempt limits and/or time limits for completing the USMLE.

Consult the State-specific Requirements Chart to determine which state's eligibility criteria you meet. Then print the instructions for that state for your future reference.

The 2008 USMLE Step 3 Application form and Instructions are in addition to any state specific instructions obtained from the State Specific requirement chart and are required for all applicants.
