Test Accommodations
Test accommodations include, but are not limited, to assistance with keyboard tasks, audio rendition, extended testing time, extra break time and enlarged text.
USMLE policy requires annotation of score reports and transcripts for Step administrations for which test accommodations are used. Score recipients who inquire about the annotation will be provided with information about the nature of the test accommodation only.
Follow these steps to request Test Accommodations for USMLE Step 3:
- Read the Guidelines carefully. Share them with the professional who will be preparing your documentation.
- If you have not requested test accommodations previously or are requesting a change to accommodations received previously, complete the Request for Test Accommodations.
- If you received accommodations on Step 1 or Step 2CK previously and are requesting the same accommodations for Step 3, please complete the Subsequent Request for Test Accommodations.
- Be sure to sign the Request for Test Accommodations or the Subsequent Request for Test Accommodations form where indicated.
- If appropriate, have your medical school complete the Certification of Prior Test Accommodations form.
- Attach documentation of the disability and your need for accommodation. Compare your documentation with the information listed in the guidelines booklet to ensure a complete submission. Incomplete documentation will delay processing of your request.
- Mail the official form, a written statement and supporting documentation to request test accommodations to the following address. TO PROTECT YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY, ALWAYS SEND YOUR REQUEST AND DOCUMENTATION TOGETHER.
Attn: Supervisor, Assessment Services
Federation of State Medical Boards
400 Fuller Wiser Road, Suite 300

- Mail your request for test accommodations to the address above at the same time you mail your Step 3 application material. Requests for test accommodations will not be processed without a current, active Step 3 application.
