David A. Johnson, MA

Mr. Johnson has served with the FSMB for over twenty-five years. In his role as FSMB’s Chief Assessment Officer, he oversees FSMB activities related to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), including policy development, committee support, Step 3 registration and transcript production. His publications on assessment and medical regulation have appeared in the Academic Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions, Journal of Medical Regulation, Guide to Medical Education in the Teaching Hospital (4th edition) and Evaluación y Aprendizaje en Educación Universitaria: Estrategias e Instrument (2022). 

His publications on the history of medical regulation have appeared in Bulletin of the History of Medicine, North Carolina Historical Review and Social History of Medicine. He is co-author (with Dr. Humayun Chaudhry) of Medical Licensing and Discipline in America (Lexington Books, 2012). His most recent book is Diploma Mill: The Rise and Fall of Dr. John Buchanan and the Eclectic Medical College of Pennsylvania (Kent State University Press, 2018). His current research focus involves the history and development of the medical licensing examination in America. David Johnson holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Texas-Arlington.
