Membership 

The Federation of State Medical Boards is a national nonprofit organization representing all state medical boards within the United States and its territories that license and discipline allopathic and osteopathic physicians and, in some jurisdictions, other health care professionals. Membership eligibility and structure are governed by the FSMB Bylaws.

FSMB membership provides state medical boards, board members and staff with a variety of resources supporting their mission of public protection. Membership categories include:

FSMB MEMBER MEDICAL BOARDS

As members of FSMB, state medical boards can access many valuable services and products. These benefits include:

FSMB FELLOWS

FSMB offers two categories of Fellow for the members and staff of state medical boards:

Board Member Fellow: A Board Member Fellow is an individual member who, because of appointment or confirmation, is designated to be a member of an FSMB Member Medical Board. A Board Member Fellow shall be a Fellow of FSMB during the member’s period of service on a Member Medical Board, and for a period of 36 months thereafter.

Staff Fellow: A Staff Fellow is an individual hired or appointed and who is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and performance of the administrative duties and functions for which a medical board is responsible. Each FSMB Member Board may designate only one individual to serve as a Staff Fellow of FSMB. No individual shall continue as a Staff Fellow upon termination of employment by or service to the Member Medical Board.

FSMB HONORARY FELLOWS

FSMB Fellows become Honorary Fellows of the FSMB three years after completing service on a Member Medical Board. Benefits for FSMB Honorary Fellows include:

FSMB ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

An FSMB Member Medical Board may designate one or more employees or staff members, other than an individual designated as a Staff Fellow, to be an Associate Member of the FSMB. No individual shall continue as an Associate Member upon termination of employment by or service to the Member Medical Board. Benefits for FSMB Associate Members include:

FSMB OFFICIAL OBSERVERS

An organization may apply for Official Observer status at the Annual Business Meeting of the FSMB House of Delegates. Benefits for FSMB Official Observers include:

  • Receive the member rate on registration for the FSMB Annual Meeting
  • Invitations to FSMB educational events
