United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
Co-sponsored by FSMB and NBME, the USMLE® is part of a physician’s pathway to medical licensure. The USMLE has three examinations, called "Steps" (Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3), which are taken at different points in a physician's education and training. Examinees who pass each Step of the USMLE have demonstrated they understand and can apply medical knowledge, clinical concepts, and fundamental patient-centered skills to practice medicine in the United States.

Application Fees
The application fee for each Step exam is non-refundable and non-transferable. Your application fee can only be paid by American Express, MasterCard, or Visa.
2026 and 2027 Fees:
Step 1: $695 USD
Step 2 CK: $695 USD
Step 3: $955 USD
Test Accommodations
After you have completed your Step exam registration, you can submit your request for test accommodations. Please visit the Test Accommodations page on the USMLE website for more information.
Name Change or Correction
If the name on your government-issued identification does not match your scheduling permit exactly, you will not be permitted to take your exam. Log in to FSMB's USMLE portal to change or correct your name and submit evidence of the change or correction.
TRANSCRIPTS: If you need to change or correct your name in relation to a transcript request, please follow the instructions on the Transcripts page here.
USMLE Eligibility Extension
You can request a one-time, three-month extension of your original eligibility period. Requests can only be submitted after your original scheduling permit is available and must be received no later than 25 days after the end of your original eligibility period.
The $70 processing fee is non-refundable.
Score Recheck
You may request a USMLE score recheck for an $80 non-refundable fee. Your request must be received no more than 90 days after your score report release date. Because USMLE's scoring process is so rigorous, a recheck is very unlikely to change your score.
