Federation of State Medical Boards Elects New Board Members and Officers
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 8, 2025) – The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) House of Delegates elected new board members and officers during its Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington.
The following individuals were elected to serve on FSMB’s Board of Directors:
George Abraham, MD, MPH (Massachusetts) assumed the role of Chair of FSMB for a one-year term. Dr. Abraham is Chief of Medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, Massachusetts, a Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Adjunct Professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS). He is the Emeritus President of the American College of Physicians (ACP) which is the largest internal medicine specialty organization in the world, having served from 2021-22. Prior to that he served as Governor of the Massachusetts Chapter, Chair of the Board of Governors (ACP) and as a member of the Board of Regents (ACP). He currently serves as a member of the Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models (ACALM). Dr. Abraham serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and prior to that, served as the Chair of the Infectious Disease Board of the ABIM.

Christy L. Valentine Theard, MD, MBA (Louisiana) was elected to serve as Chair-elect. Dr. Valentine is the President and CEO of Healthy Blue Louisiana. She has held numerous positions and appointments including having served as a New Orleans East Hospital Board Commissioner for 15 years and served eight years on the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME). She is a Past President of the LSBME. Dr. Valentine previously served as Louisiana Statewide Medical Director for Reproductive Health and Medical Consultant for the Louisiana Bureau of Community Preparedness. Dr. Valentine is a Past President of the New Orleans Medical Association. Currently, she serves on the Louisiana Managed Medical Association Board as the Board President.
Jorge A. Alsip, MD, MBA (Alabama MLC) was elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors. With more than 22 years of experience of state medical board service, Dr. Alsip currently serves as Chair and Executive Officer of the Alabama Medical Licensure Commission and previously served as Chair of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners. He is a past president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and chaired Alabama’s delegation to the AMA House of Delegates, where he advocated for patients and physicians for 25 years. Dr. Alsip earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Richland Memorial Hospital. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Informatics and has served in multiple healthcare leadership roles, including Chief Medical Information Officer for UAB Health System.
Maroulla S. Gleaton, MD (Maine Medical) was reelected to serve a one-year term on the Board of Directors. Since completing medical training at Temple University School of Medicine and a Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology residency 38 years ago, Dr. Gleaton has continually cared for people in her community. Concurrently, she has been teaching ophthalmology to Dartmouth Hitchcock family medicine residents. In 2007, Dr. Gleaton was appointed to the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine serving as a Licensure Committee member, Board Secretary, and Board Chair. She has also served on FSMB’s Bylaws Committee, the Workgroup on Innovations in State Based Licensure, the Workgroup on Sexual Boundary Violations, and the Nominating Committee. Dr. Gleaton has been a member of the FSMB Board of Directors since 2022.
Christine M. Khandelwal, DO, MHPE (North Carolina) was elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors. Dr. Khandelwal graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by a Geriatrics Fellowship, concentrating in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, at UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Khandelwal has been practicing as a clinician educator, developing programs for the past 10 years, including developing the Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service at the Wake Med Hospital System where she also served as faculty for Wake Med Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Khandelwal currently serves as the Chair of Medicine at WakeMed Raleigh Hospital and Professor of Family Medicine at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Director of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. She serves in several leadership roles to represent the field of geriatrics, hospice and palliative medicine, including being appointed to serve on the North Carolina Medicine Board the past six years, this year as the President of the Board.
Ramanathan Raju, MD, MBA – (New York) was elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors. A graduate of Madras Medical College, Dr. Raju obtained a master’s degree in general surgery and was elected a Fellow by the Royal College of Surgeons in England. Throughout his career, Dr. Raju has served in many roles as a healthcare executive, medical educator, and researcher. He has held a number of academic appointments as professor of surgery, chair of surgery, and director of medical education. Dr. Raju previously served as President and CEO of Cook County Health and Hospital System in Chicago, and NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest public health system. He has served on many regional and national boards such as the American Hospital Association, American Essential Hospitals, the Greater New York Hospital Association, and the Healthcare Association of New York State, among others. Dr. Raju is a member of both the NY State Board for Medicine and the New York State Office of Professional Medical Conduct.
